Rap To Me

MAZEMENT, Closed Doors, May 2020

Poetry was my first form of expression. It not only helped me conquer some great challenges throughout my teenage years. It also helped develop my writing skills, by experimenting with different rhyme schemes, wordplay, and really explore my capabilities as a writer. The goal has always been to write as 3 Dimensional as much as possible. When that wouldn’t work, I’d try something different. Rap. Lyricism. Songwriting. MCing. There are now so many more ways to describe the art form. There are also many ways to misconstrue it as well. It’s a feeling, an emotion, a reaction, an impulse, a thought. It’s an achievement when done right. History has made it possible to foresee the future. We can’t hear what it will sound like yet, but we can be certain that there will be potential. How long can humankind move forward, without looking back at what our ancestors accomplished? Or even what they sounded like, looked like, or who they inspired? Genres evolve, styles as well, but with those elements of the past will still exist even if it’s in the smallest way. It’s an art form we can relate to. No matter what it sounds like, it’s direct medicinal value is irreplaceable. It sometimes takes losing it to realize it. Where it once unified, it now separates. Where it once stood its ground, it now takes a bad reputation. Believe it or not, we need it more than ever now, Rap To Me.
